Summary

"The Doctor, &c., vol. 3 (of 7)" by Robert Southey is a historical fiction that uses the life of a doctor to explore what it means to be human, particularly looking at love, loss, and the search for happiness. The story shares different tales that all connect to show how complex people are. The book starts by saying that all our stories are connected. One main character, Leonard, is dealing with the pain of losing his wife, Margaret, and the story shows how much love can change a person. To help cope with his loss, Leonard focuses on his daughter, Deborah, which brings up ideas about family and love as he navigates the rules and expectations of the society around him.

About the Author

Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. Like the other Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey began as a radical but became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions. Other romantics such as Byron accused him of siding with the establishment for money and status. He is remembered especially for the poem "After Blenheim" and the original version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
