Summary

"The Doctor, &c., vol. 4 (of 7)" by Robert Southey is a continuation of a doctor's story, exploring big ideas like death, time moving forward, and how people act in public versus who they really are. The volume starts with thoughtful quotes and ideas about what it means to be human, looking at both happy and sad moments, and how quickly life passes by. The narrative introduces different people, including a thoughtful address to women potentially anticipating a wedding which could also bring future sorrow. A wise, retired duchess is introduced whose perspective on reflection, solitude and perspective provide thoughts about happiness, inviting the reader to reflect on their own life withing the stories shared with these characters.

About the Author

Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. Like the other Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey began as a radical but became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions. Other romantics such as Byron accused him of siding with the establishment for money and status. He is remembered especially for the poem "After Blenheim" and the original version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
