Summary

"The Collector's Whatnot: A Compendium, Manual, and Syllabus of Information and Advice on all Subjects Appertaining to the Collection of Antiques, both Ancient and not so Ancient" by Booth Tarkington is a comical guide to the antique-collecting scene from the early 1900s. Through the voices of Cornelius Obenchain Van Loot, Milton Kilgallen, and Murgatroyd Elphinstone, the book examines the habits, personalities, and pleasures found in the realm of antiques, emphasizing the skill of spotting real gems among simple old objects. The story begins with a lighthearted and teasing attitude, presenting the made-up American Academy for the Popularization of Antiquities and its mission to boost the knowledge and love of true antiques. The reader learns of strange members and their habits, such as Professor Milton Kilgallen's love of furniture polish. The narrative also alludes to the difficulties of valuing antiques, underlining that collecting is both a personal interest and a potentially risky job. It sets a fun mood for people to learn about antique collecting.
