Summary

"The Turmoil: A Novel" by Booth Tarkington is a compelling story from the early 1900s that examines a family navigating immense societal and industrial changes in their fast-growing Midwestern city. The book shows how ambition and the pursuit of wealth can clash with older values, particularly within the Sheridan family, where the father, James, embodies the city’s drive, and his son, Bibbs, questions the cost of progress and struggles to find his place. The scene is set by contrasting the city’s idyllic past with its smoky, chaotic present, symbolizing the shift from tradition to modernity. These stark changes are mirrored within the Sheridans, highlighting James's pride in his success and the underlying tension caused by Bibbs's discomfort with their lifestyle.
