"The Good Work" by Theodore L. Thomas is a science fiction story set in a grim future, where overpopulation and limited resources force most people to live on basic synthetic food. The story follows Jeremiah Winthrop, a father desperately trying to improve his family's harsh life. Seeing his son's future dimming, Jeremiah seeks a government job and becomes part of a maintenance team that does basic repairs on buildings. Through this simple work, the family finds renewed hope, stronger bonds, and a sense of worth, which sharply contrasts with the hopelessness they once felt.
