Summary

"Evangeline" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is a poem from the 1800s that narrates the sorrowful tale of Evangeline, a young woman from Acadia, and her separation from Gabriel, the man she loves. The poem explores the huge impact of conflict and the strength of love, following Evangeline's journey after the Acadians are forced from their homes by British soldiers. Readers are transported to the village of Grand-Pré, where Evangeline lives a contented life with her father and makes preparations to marry Gabriel. As their peaceful world is established, the setting is changed forever when British troops arrive with orders to remove the Acadians from their land. Evangeline and Gabriel are pulled apart amidst the confusion, beginning a sad journey of continuing affection against the pain and hardship they come up against.
