"The Vicissitudes of Evangeline" by Elinor Glyn is a story from the beginning of the 1900's that follows Evangeline, a young woman whose life takes an surprising turn when her adopted mother passes away, changing her from a wealthy young lady to someone seeking adventure. The book looks at ideas about being independent, how people see you in society and her hopes for love through Evangeline's memories of what happened before and her unsure future. At the beginning, she thinks about how she feels now that her rich guardian is gone, showing she wants to live life to the fullest as an adventurer but also acknowledging her good looks and the problems of not having much money. As she gets ready to see Christopher Carruthers to talk about what might happen to her, she thinks about not having many happy memories growing up and maybe having to marry someone she doesn't like. Her thoughts show she is both excited and a little innocent as she starts her journey full of adventures and love in a world that is changing.
