Summary

"Falkland" by Edward Bulwer-Lytton is a book that explores the troubled life of Erasmus Falkland, a man wrestling with love, grief, and his own beliefs, through a story of his isolated life and interactions with others. Told through letters to his friend Frederick Monkton, Falkland reveals his dissatisfaction with society and its shallow nature, which becomes known through experiences, relationships, and heartbreaks that molded his way of thinking. Wracked with loneliness and sadness, Falkland desperately seeks meaningful relationships, especially related to a past romance. The novel is filled with deep thought and contemplation, starting a deep questioning of the meaning of strong emotion and moral grounding.
