"Square Pegs: A Rhymed Fantasy For Two Girls" by Clifford Bax is a playful drama from the beginning of the 1900s. Told through rhyming words, the play brings together Hilda, a girl living in the now, and Gioconda, a girl from Venice in the 1400s. The story travels through time to look closely at how people thought about love in different ages. Hilda and Gioconda find each other in a magical garden, both wishing they could live in the other’s time. They talk about their troubles with love, showing just how different romance was back then compared to today. Hilda doesn't like how simple and casual her boyfriend's proposal was, and Gioconda feels held back by the strict rules of her time. As they pretend to be each other's lovers, they learn that love is the same no matter when you live, and they both choose to be happy with their own lives.
