Summary

"Hobson's Choice: A Lancashire Comedy in Four Acts" by Harold Brighouse is a play that unfolds in the 1880s, following Maggie Hobson, the headstrong oldest daughter of a boot shop owner, as she navigates life in Lancashire. Centered around themes of family tensions, social standing, and female autonomy, the story kicks off inside the lively Hobson's boot shop, managed by Maggie and her siblings, who constantly deal with their overbearing father. The play highlights the funny but strained ties within the Hobson family, especially the conflict between Maggie and her dad, who insists on picking his daughters' husbands. Determined to marry Will Mossop, a common bootmaker, Maggie challenges her father's traditional beliefs, going against the grain in a society that doesn't value the will of women.
