Summary

"The Marbeck Inn: A Novel" by Harold Brighouse is a tale set in the early 1900s, charting the course of Sam Branstone, a young man from Manchester, as he seeks a future beyond his family's humble life. After Sam bravely rescues a boy from an oncoming train, he becomes a local hero. This act of heroism brings an opportunity from Mr. Councillor Travers, whose son was saved. Mr. Travers extends an offer for Sam attend grammar school, but the offer is turned down by Sam's mother, Anne Branchestone, because she is a very independent women. The story centers on Anne as she wrestles with her family's values, societal expectations, and their individual desires, captured against a backdrop of class differences and dreams, focusing on Sam’s pursuit of something more.

About the Author

Harold Brighouse was an English playwright and author whose best known play is Hobson's Choice. He was a prominent member, together with Allan Monkhouse and Stanley Houghton, of a group known as the Manchester School of dramatists.
