Summary

"The Phantom Ship" by Frederick Marryat is a tale of ghosts and sailing, set in the past, that mainly follows Philip Vanderdecken and Amine. Philip is a young man eager to find his place, while Amine is a girl with a history linked to Philip’s family. Early in the book, Philip lives with his sick mother, who keeps a secret about his missing father. Philip wants to venture out into the world, but his mother's worries and a strange letter about his father hint at troubling times ahead. Love, loss, and what is meant to be become big topics as the lives of Philip and Amine become tangled in a ghostly legend of the sea.

About the Author

Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and a novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
