Summary

"The Fortunate Island, and Other Stories" by Charles Heber Clark is a collection of short stories from the close of the 1800's. The book begins with humor, adventure, and love, focusing on Professor E. L. Baffin and his daughter, Matilda, after they are shipwrecked and find themselves on an uncharted island teeming with striking beauty as well as unusual residents. After the shipwreck of the "Morning Star," Professor Baffin and Matilda manage to get away on a raft while the rest of the passengers are lost. As they float towards a promising land, they ponder what might be waiting—especially whether it is home to people-eaters or geological wonders. Their arrival on the island results in a meeting with Father Anselm, a recluse who tells them that they have found a lost group similar to the time of King Arthur; this sets the stage for unusual adventures and cultural meetings, including funny comments on old customs and social rules.
