Summary

"The Minority of Henry the Third" by Kate Norgate is a historical book that tells the story of England during the early years of King Henry III's reign. After King John dies, his young son Henry becomes king at only nine years old, leading to big problems with power as different groups fight for control. William the Marshal steps up to protect the young king and gather support from barons who are faithful to the crown. The story vividly shows the dangers and excitement of the time, including trouble with invaders from other countries and disagreements among the English nobles. The book describes important people and what happened during this period, showing just how hard it was for such a young king to rule.

About the Author

Kate Norgate was a British historian. She was one of the first women to achieve academic success in this sphere, and is best known for her history of England under the Angevin kings and for coining the name Angevin Empire to describe their domains. She was self-educated in the Victorian era when higher education was generally denied to women. Her obituary in The Times described her as "the most learned woman historian of the pre-academic period."
