Summary

"Letters from America" by Rupert Brooke is a collection of letters detailing the author’s travels across America and Canada in 1913 and illustrates his evolving perspectives as a British poet immersed in a new world. The narrative starts with his preconceived notions about America, which contrasts starkly with his actual experiences in New York which he finds the urban landscape both stunning and gritty. Through encounters and conversations, Brooke highlights the cultural differences between America and Britain. His journey becomes a reflection on identity, hospitality, and the essence of American society as he navigates its contrasts with his roots.

About the Author

Rupert Chawner Brooke was an English poet known for his idealistic war sonnets written during the First World War, especially "The Soldier". He was also known for his boyish good looks, which were said to have prompted the Irish poet W. B. Yeats to describe him as "the handsomest young man in England". He died of septicaemia following a mosquito bite whilst aboard a French hospital ship moored off the island of Skyros in the Aegean Sea.
