Summary

"Impressions of America" by Oscar Wilde is an account of his travels across the United States during a time of rapid change. Wilde portrays his experiences touring the nation in 1882 and gives his thoughts on American culture and customs. Through his lectures and meetings, Wilde looks at the differences between American and British societies. He comments on the casual way Americans are dressed, the rapid pace of American life, and the loud sounds of the cities. Even though he was unimpressed by natural wonders like Niagara Falls, he finds beauty in American machines and buildings. Cities like San Francisco stand out to him, and he thinks about the roles of women and politics in society. Wilde's clever remarks show the practical way Americans think, which he compares to his own romantic feelings, showing both his respect and disapproval.
