Summary

"Selected Prose of Oscar Wilde" by Oscar Wilde is a gathering of writings from the late 1800s that shows off the author’s cleverness and thoughts on art, books, and culture. The book highlights Wilde's view that beauty is important and that art and life are connected. Robert Ross's introduction talks about how hard it is to pick pieces for a collection and gets readers ready for Wilde's ideas in essay form. Ross points out that Wilde's words are clear and easy to understand, unlike some other writers of the time. The book also shares Wilde's opinions on different writers, like his critical take on George Meredith and his thoughts on realism in books at the time. This start gives a taste of Wilde's style, mixing smart criticism with beautiful writing, pulling readers into his creative world.
