Summary

"Essays and Lectures" by Oscar Wilde is a compilation of essays and lectures, showcasing Wilde's clever perspectives on art, society, and the role of criticism, likely from the late 1800s. The collection emphasizes how historical criticism emerged alongside democracy and scientific thinking as a response to traditional power structures. Wilde presents historical criticism as crucial for interpreting literature and culture, championing it as a way to question established ideas. He highlights the Greeks as early adopters of this critical thinking, establishing the groundwork for Wilde's deeper investigation into intellectual history and its influence on human advancement and artistic creation.
