Summary

"A Searchlight on Germany: Germany's Blunders, Crimes and Punishment" by William T. (William Temple) Hornaday is a historical analysis that dissects Germany's role in World War I, revealing a narrative of errors, unethical actions, and responsibility for the brutalities of wartime. The book gives American readers a thorough look in order to influence views in post-war peace talks. It is structured around Germany's missteps, its wartime wrongdoings, and the repercussions it ought to face. Hornaday makes it clear that Germany's first mistakes set off the war, and he shares horrifying true stories of violence against regular people and prisoners, which strengthens his claim that Germany did not only make military errors but also failed morally. The use of chemical weapons, the abuse of prisoners, and the murder of guiltless people are used to depict a depressing portrait of the German military campaign. In the end, Hornaday argues that Germany must be held liable for its acts after the war in order to prevent conflicts in the future.
