Summary

"German Atrocities: A Record of Shameless Deeds" by William Le Queux is a stark portrayal of the brutal actions of German soldiers during World War I, specifically in Belgium. The book seeks to reveal the moral failures and inhumane treatment inflicted upon civilians during the war. Le Queux uses various sources, such as official reports and personal stories, to illustrate a troubling image of wartime violence. The author begins with a preface that sets the stage for the rest of the book, emphasizing the need to honestly describe the atrocities committed by the German military that caused widespread suffering. He describes the organized and terrible attacks on the Belgian population, portraying the German forces as merciless invaders driven by a brutal military mindset. The initial argument suggests that these actions were not random occurrences, but instead a calculated plan to create fear and defeat civilian resistance, likening them to historical figures like Attila and setting the scene for a thorough examination of the inhumanity displayed during the conflict.

About the Author

William Tufnell Le Queux was an Anglo-French journalist and writer. He was also a diplomat, a traveller, a flying buff who officiated at the first British air meeting at Doncaster in 1909, and a wireless pioneer who broadcast music from his own station long before radio was generally available; his claims regarding his own abilities and exploits, however, were usually exaggerated. His best-known works are the anti-French and anti-Russian invasion fantasy The Great War in England in 1897 (1894) and the anti-German invasion fantasy The Invasion of 1910 (1906), the latter becoming a bestseller.
