Summary

"Victory" by Lester Del Rey is a science fiction story that tells of a time after a big war in space, probably written back in the 1950s. It examines the courage it takes to be loyal and how politics can be twisted when different planets and species are involved, after an Earth that's been nearly destroyed and the problems that come from being a coward when war breaks out. Captain Duke O'Neill is the main character, and he has to deal with a world that left him and his people behind during a really tough battle with aliens called Throm. The story is mostly about Captain Duke O'Neill coming back to Meloa after fighting the Throm for many years. He sees Earth is not the same; it's wrecked and changed, and he has to face tough truths about survival and how humans can betray each other. The book shows the reader the mental and moral problems that soldiers face when they go back to Earth and see that it's become neutral, and the people there have become too relaxed. As political problems get worse and new dangers pop up, O'Neill has to make tough choices about what duty and identity mean. In the end, he has to face his past and figure out how he fits into a future where it's hard to tell who's a friend and who's an enemy.
