Summary

"The Kidnapped President" by Guy Boothby is an adventure from long ago. It tells the tale of Dick Helmsworth, a former ship officer whose life takes a sharp turn after he's unfairly fired by a mean captain. With his life adrift, Helmsworth meets a shadowy Spaniard named Don Guzman de Silvestre. Don Guzman offers Helmsworth a risky job: to help deport a president from South America. The story opens with Helmsworth's life at sea and his building anger with Captain Harveston. After a series of ship issues and the captain's nasty attitude, Helmsworth is kicked out of his job. This leads to his fateful meeting with Don Guzman, who wants to use Helmsworth's special talents to take back political control in his country. The whole thing is set up to be a mix of high-seas adventure, political secrets, and personal risks.

About the Author

Guy Newell Boothby was a prolific Australian novelist and writer, noted for sensational fiction in variety magazines around the end of the nineteenth century. He lived mainly in England. He is best known for such works as the Dr Nikola series, about an occultist criminal mastermind who is a Victorian forerunner to Fu Manchu, and Pharos, the Egyptian, a tale of Gothic Egypt, mummies' curses and supernatural revenge. Rudyard Kipling was his friend and mentor, and his books were remembered with affection by George Orwell.
