Summary

"To The West" by George Manville Fenn is a 19th-century tale about two young clerks, Mayne Gordon and Esau Dean, working for the cruel Mr. Isaac Dempster. Tired of their harsh lives, they dream of escaping to British Columbia to seek adventure and fortune in gold prospecting, where they imagine meeting interesting people and facing exciting challenges. The story begins by showing the boys' tough environment under Mr. Dempster, who is mean and unfair, and as Mayne suffers more from their situation, Esau thinks about joining the army for a more thrilling life. Their story changes dramatically when they stand up to their boss, which leads to a fight and their arrest. After being freed, they see a chance to go to British Columbia for a better life, filling them with hope for the future.
