Summary

"Brownsmith's Boy: A Romance in a Garden" by George Manville Fenn is a 19th-century novel centered on young Grant Dennison and his difficult life change after the death of his mother. After his mother's death, Grant, a young boy, discovers the secrets of gardening, the value of friendship, and the pains and pleasures of growing up. The story kicks off with Grant looking out over the garden, dreaming of a world beyond his window and his fateful first encounter with Shock, a wild boy, running carefree through the land. As death darkens his doorstep, Grant is thrown headfirst into a world of demanding work and messy relationships, made beautiful through the unexpected kindness of Old Brownsmith, setting the scene for Grant's journey through grief, youth, and into manhood, all set among the rich garden.
