Summary

"Free as in Freedom: Richard Stallman's Crusade for Free Software" by Sam Williams is a biography that recounts the story of Richard Stallman, a key player in the free software movement, and examines his fight for software freedom against proprietary systems. The book begins by describing Stallman's early life and the experiences that influenced his views on software sharing and ownership, especially an incident at MIT involving a printer. When Stallman was unable to fix a printer issue because the software was restricted, this made him think about the hacker culture and the problems with companies keeping software secret. This event pushed him to believe that software should be open to everyone. As the story progresses, it shows how Stallman changed from a programmer into someone who strongly supports free software, questioning the ethics of proprietary software and the value of working together openly in the tech world.
