Summary

"The Works of Lucian of Samosata — Volume 03" by Lucian of Samosata is a collection of philosophical writings that opens with the story of Demonax, a philosopher celebrated for his intelligence and humor. The book dives into ideas about friendship, how to live a good life, and observations about society during that period. The initial narrative paints a picture of Demonax's life, displaying his strong beliefs and intellectual nature. It stresses his lack of interest in money and fame, focusing instead on living honestly and wisely. By sharing stories of his interactions and how he helped friends through problems, Demonax appears as someone universally kind and clear-thinking. The opening creates a compelling portrait of Demonax, paving the way for more in-depth philosophical discussions.

About the Author

Lucian of Samosata was a Hellenized Syrian satirist, rhetorician and pamphleteer who is best known for his characteristic tongue-in-cheek style, with which he frequently ridiculed superstition, religious practices, and belief in the paranormal. Although his native language was probably Syriac, all of his extant works are written entirely in ancient Greek.
