"Blue-Stocking Hall" by William Pitt Scargill is an early 1800s novel that uses letters to tell a tale of family life, the role of education for women, and what society expects from people. Charles Falkland is traveling to see the family of his friend, Arthur Howard, and his letters show how excited he is to meet them and see new places. The Douglas family, especially Emily, writes letters too, sharing what they think and do, like helping their neighbor, Mr. Otway. These early letters give us clues about what will happen when Arthur, Charles, and the Douglases meet, especially when they have different ideas about women and what's new or old in society.
