"The Kink" by Thomson Burtis is a story set in the early days of military aviation, a time of rapid change and daring feats. The story looks at the uneasy relationship between older pilots facing the end of their careers and younger, more reckless ones eager to prove themselves. Jim Finley, a test pilot wrestling with the fact that he's getting too old to fly, clashes with Kink Forell, a young pilot full of youthful bravado. When Jim's failing eyesight forces him out of the cockpit, he watches as Kink's arrogance grows, leading to a dangerous situation where they must come together to pull off a risky takeoff from a difficult spot. The challenges of overcoming pride to save lives are core to this story, where the main character reflects on the difficulties of leaving behind a profession they love so much.
