Summary

"The Flutter of the Goldleaf, and Other Plays" by Olive Tilford Dargan is a compilation of theatrical works from the early 1900s, beginning with a story about a student named Philo Warner, whose intense scientific pursuits cause a decline in his mental health as he fixates on new inventions and concepts. The play opens in Philo's attic laboratory, where his parents, Hiram and Mary Ann Warner, worry about his obsessive research and the possibility of doctors coming to assess him, and the conversations show their concern and the potential ramifications for the family, showing their parental love mixed with worries about their son's health. The story looks at a number of things, including trying to be successful, what society expects, and the delicate balance between being a genius and being insane, while Philo's relationships with his family demonstrates misunderstandings, heightened by the approaching visit from two doctors—Dr. Bellows and Dr. Seymour—raising the issue of whether Philo's brilliance is going to destroy him.
