Summary

"The Dramatic Works of G. E. Lessing" by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing is a compilation of 1700s plays that demonstrate the author's widespread methods and focus. Notable works, like "Miss Sara Sampson," "Philotas," "Emilia Galotti," and "Nathan the Wise," concentrate on themes of emotional magnitude, communal concerns, and the inventive aspects of theater. The collection brings to light the challenging nature of connections between people and moral issues. As "Miss Sara Sampson" begins at an inn, Sir William Sampson reveals his grief over his daughter's tough situation. Familial affection marked by suffering emerges as Sir William voices concerns about Sara, who seems to have been misguided by Mellefont, her admirer. Themes of pride, affection, and the pursuit of forgiveness amidst societal rules and individual flaws are established through interactions between Sir William and Waitwell, his faithful servant, alongside Sara's emotional confusion. The characters' battles predict a vibrant emotional background that drives audiences to consider features of honesty and wickedness in how people act.
