Summary

"By Violence" by John Trevena is a story set in the wild landscapes of Dartmoor, where the main character, Simon Searell, searches for what it means to be spiritual after turning away from the church. Feeling let down by established religion, Simon goes on a personal quest for truth and a connection to something greater in nature. Along the way, he meets people like Oliver Vorse and his wife Sibley, whose troubled lives show the darker sides of humanity. As Simon tries to find his own path to understanding the divine, he is constantly reminded of the cruelty and harshness that exists in the world. The story takes a turn with the arrival of a new baby, symbolizing hope amidst the violence and helping Simon realize the importance of love, community, and the relationships that tie everything together.
