Evadne's life changes when her father dies from a lung disease, and she is forced to move to the United States to live with her uncle's family in Marlborough. She faces a difficult adjustment to her new life, struggling to fit in with her uncle's family, particularly her cousin Isabelle, who is beautiful but cold and distant. Evadne longs for her father and the happy life they shared in Barbadoes. Meanwhile, Evadne's uncle, Judge Hildreth, is hiding a secret: he has been managing his brother's estate and has not been entirely truthful about the state of Evadne's inheritance. As Evadne navigates her new life, she begins to uncover the truth about her family's past and her own circumstances.
