Summary

"The Man Farthest Down: A Record of Observation and Study in Europe" by Booker T. Washington is a revealing exploration of the lives of impoverished workers in Europe during the early 1900s, told through the author’s personal journey across the continent. Setting sail from New York in August 1910, Washington seeks to understand the hardships faced by Europe's working class and those considering emigration to America. Through direct engagement and observation of the lives of the underprivileged, Washington draws comparisons between the struggles they face and those endured by African Americans back home. Rather than seeing famous landmarks, he aims to collect untold stories from people living in the margins, revealing a deep connection between socio-economic issues on both sides of the Atlantic and suggesting universal, shared experiences of oppression and resilience.
