Summary

"Europe—whither bound? (Quo vadis Europa?)" by Stephen Graham is a reflective travelogue that documents the author's journey through the capital cities of Europe in 1921, just after World War I, where he witnesses the state of a continent grappling with change. The narrative weaves together observations on societal shifts, national identities, and the long shadows of war, capturing the collective feeling of uncertainty that gripped Europe. Beginning in Athens, the author grapples with Europe's perceived decline and the fading of its ideals, contrasting the grandeur of the ancient city with the realities of the modern world. His writing evokes the atmosphere of the time, detailing observations of the lifestyles of the people, along with the undercurrents of social and political tensions, all of which set the stage for an exploration of the complicated issues defining post-war Europe as the continent struggles to confront it's past to make its way to the future.
