Summary

"The Bag of Diamonds" by George Manville Fenn is a late 1800's novel that unfolds in London, centering on the life of Dr. Chartley, a doctor consumed by the dream of creating an eternal life elixir, a pursuit that leads him to ignore his medical practice and struggle with money. The story is brought to life by his children, Hendon and Richmond, along with Bob, the funny houseboy, each playing important roles as the story progresses. The novel starts on a foggy night in December, where the silence is observed by Constable John Whyley, whose suspicions are raised by strange activity at Dr. Chartley's office. He meets Richmond, the doctor's daughter, who is worrying about her father, which leads to them entering the surgery where they find unsettling truths against a background of mystery, mixed with humor and suspense. It's a tale of personal troubles, family bonds, and darker secrets hidden under normal life.
