Summary

"The Thunder Bird" by B. M. Bower is a story from the early 1900s about a young pilot named Johnny Jewel who is dealing with tough situations involving love, his goals, and doing what's right. Johnny wants to show he's worthy, both to his sweetheart, Mary V Selmer, and to himself. He feels pressured because he owes money to Mary V's father and dreams of flying high. Early in the story, we see Johnny thinking over his life and feeling unsure after the army turns him away because he's too young, and because he has to pay back money for a plane that was stolen adding greatly to his stress. He talks with Mary V, which shows the strain between what he wants and what others expect of him. Johnny's set on paying off his debt before he gets too serious with Mary V, which leads to problems and tests him in big ways.

About the Author

Bertha Muzzy Sinclair or Sinclair-Cowan, née Muzzy, best known by her pseudonym B. M. Bower, was an American author who wrote novels, fictional short stories, and screenplays about the American Old West. Her works, featuring cowboys and cows of the Flying U Ranch in Montana, reflected "an interest in ranch life, the use of working cowboys as main characters, the occasional appearance of eastern types for the sake of contrast, a sense of western geography as simultaneously harsh and grand, and a good deal of factual attention to such matters as cattle branding and bronc busting." She was married three times: to Clayton Bower in 1890, to Bertrand William Sinclair in 1905, and to Robert Elsworth Cowan in 1921. However, she chose to publish under the name Bower.
