Summary

"The Promise of Air" by Algernon Blackwood is a story from the early 1900s about a man named Joseph Wimble, who is calm and doesn't really care about what people expect from him. His father, a chemist, wants him to get married to the right person and have a good life. But everything changes when Joseph secretly marries someone his father doesn't approve of, pushing him to find something real in nature. Joseph’s deep interest in birds shows how much he wants to be free and connected to the sky, which represents going beyond what society says is normal. The story then looks at Joseph's love for his wife, Joan, and how he's always searching for a happier, more natural life.

About the Author

The literary critic S. T. Joshi stated, "His work is more consistently meritorious than any weird writer's except Dunsany's" and that his short story collection Incredible Adventures (1914) "may be the premier weird collection of this or any other century".
