Summary

"The Wishing-Ring Man" by Margaret Widdemer is a story from the early 1900s that follows Joy Havenith, a young woman overshadowed by her famous poet grandfather. Joy feels stuck in her perfect, yet unfulfilling, life and wants more excitement and romance, leading her to feel like an ornament instead of a person. Seeing a couple deeply in love makes her realize she lacks these connections in her own life. As Joy deals with feeling confined, she meets a young man who understands her, starting her journey to find love and adventure. The beginning shows her inner conflicts and longings, setting the scene for her self-discovery and search for connection.
