Summary

"The Wolves of God, and Other Fey Stories" by Algernon Blackwood and Wilfred Wilson is a compilation of eerie tales from the early 1900s that looks at the power of nature, ancient beliefs, and things beyond our understanding, often mixing scary and mysterious elements. The first story, "The Wolves of God," follows Jim Peace as he comes back to his home in the Orkney Islands after thirty years in the Canadian wilderness, dealing with good memories and worries. As Jim arrives in Sanday, he feels both familiar and uneasy and reconnects with his brother, Tom. Their meeting brings out Jim's hidden silence and worry, hinting at a deeper fear from his time in the wild. During their drive home to the farm, a sense of coming doom grows, shown in Jim's response to things like a dog barking, which reminds him of the "Wolves of God." As the story builds, Jim's fear grows, leading to a scary reveal about a terrible sacrifice he made in the wilderness, touching on themes of deep horror and how being alone can change a person.

The literary critic S. T. Joshi stated, "His work is more consistently meritorious than any weird writer's except Dunsany's" and that his short story collection Incredible Adventures (1914) "may be the premier weird collection of this or any other century".
