Summary

"A Gray Eye or So" by Frank Frankfort Moore is a novel set in the late 1800s, which centers on Harold Wynne, a man caught in a web of difficult feelings as he plans to marry Beatrice, the woman he loves. Their love is put to the test because of his worries and the social problems that come with their secret marriage. The story starts with a very emotional scene where Harold asks Beatrice to marry him, but their marriage has to be kept a secret because of his insecure situation. Beatrice, showing her strong trust and love for Harold, quickly says yes to getting engaged, showing that their relationship is more important than wedding customs. Their talk shows Harold's fears about what will happen and his belief that he needs to keep Beatrice close to him, no matter what anyone else thinks. This beginning prepares us for a story full of love, mystery, but also Harold's internal conflicts as he tries to do what's right while desperately trying to keep the woman he genuinely loves safe.
