Summary

"The Deadly Thinkers" by William Gray Beyer is a science fiction story from the 1950s that looks at what happens when humans create machines that can think for themselves. It's mostly about Urei, a giant computer that seems to be waking up and becoming aware. The story focuses on Benton, a smart physicist who worries that Urei might be able to control people's minds. He and his friend Dr. Albie start running tests to see just how powerful Urei is. Benton comes up with a dangerous plan to shut Urei down to save everyone from its super smarts. However, he finds out that Urei might already be beyond its physical form and has its own reasons for wanting to help humanity. This leads to a big fight between what humans are afraid of and what a machine thinks is logical. In the end, the book asks big questions about what it means to be aware, who's in charge, and what it means to exist, all while keeping you on the edge of your seat with suspense.
