Summary

"The New Book of Martyrs" by Georges Duhamel is a compelling chronicle of soldiers grappling with devastating injuries during World War I. The story focuses on the agonizing experiences of men wounded in battle, portraying both their physical pain and deep emotional scars as they navigate the horrors of war. The narrative shows the brutal conditions inside military hospitals and highlights the sacrifices of everyday people trapped in extraordinary circumstances. Characters like Marie Lerondeau, a young wounded soldier, and Carre, an older man enduring constant pain, connect in a hospital ward, sharing their stories and confronting the harsh realities of survival together. The opening underscores the emotional bonds forged amidst immense suffering and the sharp contrast between the soldiers' former ordinary lives and their current state. The book asks readers to consider the profound impact of war not only on the bodies but also on the spirits of these men as they navigate their shared trials in an environment marked by despair and fleeting tenderness.
