Summary

"The Gods are Athirst" by Anatole France is a historical novel that transports readers to the heart of the French Revolution through the eyes of Évariste Gamelin, a painter consumed by revolutionary fervor. The story opens in a repurposed church, now a hub for political activity, where Gamelin is drawn deeper into the revolutionary cause. He becomes entangled in heated debates and signs petitions that demand the removal of those deemed traitors, highlighting the sacred and political nature of the time. Gamelin's journey reveals his passionate dedication to liberty and virtue, and the narrative examines the high price of fanaticism as the pursuit of justice leads to personal and societal conflicts, showcasing both Gamelin's internal battles and the tumultuous atmosphere of revolutionary Paris.
