Summary

"The Street of Seven Stars" by Mary Roberts Rinehart is a tale set in Austria around the start of the 1900's, telling the story of young American musicians trying to make their mark in the world. It focuses on Harmony Wells, a gifted violinist battling the pressure of her dreams while dealing with the troubles of being in another country. The story begins in an old house, full of history, where Harmony faces the struggles of a lonely life as a musician, but she finds friendship and support with others in similar situations. They cope with what society expects, their own ambitions and challenges, along with the real possibilities of loneliness and failure. Harmony journeys into a world where love, survival, and music mix together, creating a deep story about people and their feelings.

About the Author

Mary Roberts Rinehart was an American writer, often called the American Agatha Christie. Rinehart published her first mystery novel The Circular Staircase in 1908, which introduced the "had I but known" narrative style. Rinehart is also considered the earliest known source of the phrase "the butler did it", in her novel The Door (1930), although the exact phrase does not appear in her work and the plot device had been used prior to that time. She also worked to tell the stories and experiences of front line soldiers during World War I, one of the first women to travel to the Belgian front lines.
