Summary

"Locked Doors" by Mary Roberts Rinehart is a mystery novel that plunges readers into a world of suspense and hidden dangers in the shadows of early 20th-century intrigue. Anne Adams, a young nurse, finds herself at the center of a puzzling case in the Reed family’s ominous household, where eerie incidents stir suspicion and raise the possibility of criminal activity. Her charge of tending for two small children turns perilous as she uncovers unsettling family secrets when she encounters locked doors, bizarre behaviors from Mr. and Mrs. Reed, and a governess held under lock and key. Fueled by a relentless need to know the truth, Anne's investigation unexpectedly connects her to a plague incident where rats mysteriously escaped, permeating the family home with dread, resulting in a dramatic revelation of mystery and human vulnerabilities.

About the Author

Mary Roberts Rinehart was an American writer, often called the American Agatha Christie. Rinehart published her first mystery novel The Circular Staircase in 1908, which introduced the "had I but known" narrative style. Rinehart is also considered the earliest known source of the phrase "the butler did it", in her novel The Door (1930), although the exact phrase does not appear in her work and the plot device had been used prior to that time. She also worked to tell the stories and experiences of front line soldiers during World War I, one of the first women to travel to the Belgian front lines.
