Summary

"Up the Ladder; or, Striving and Thriving" by Madeline Leslie is a tale set in the 1800's about a young boy named Harrison, who shows how important it is to work hard and never give up when things get tough. The book focuses on Harrison's journey and the obstacles he faces as he tries to make life better for his family by being persistent, honest and hard-working. Beginning with Harrison as a ten-year-old doing his best to help his poor family, despite being so young, we encounter a little girl named Ella and see how differently they live, yet Harrison doesn’t feel sorry for himself. The story shows how Harrison’s mom teaches him that being serious about work and being a good person are the keys to getting ahead.

About the Author

Harriette Newell Woods Baker was an American author of books for children, and editor. Her career as an author began when she was about 30 years old. She devoted herself successfully to novels; but after about 15 years, she wrote popular religious literature. Her most famous book, Tim, the Scissors Grinder, sold half a million copies, and was translated into several languages. Baker published about 200 moral and religious tales under the pen name "Mrs. Madeline Leslie". She also wrote under her own name or initials, and under that of "Aunt Hattie". She wrote chiefly for the young, and was still writing in 1893 when she died.
