Summary

"Essays: Scientific, Political, & Speculative; Vol. 2 of 3" by Herbert Spencer is a compilation of essays from the late 1800's. It investigates the connections between science, philosophy, and how society functions, striving to uncover the core ideas that guide these areas. With an exploration of topics such as science categories, the beginnings of scientific thinking, and analyses of accepted philosophies, the book starts by examining scientific knowledge in contrast to common understanding, showing that science builds upon regular knowledge through experienced events. Using logical thought, the author proposes that both science and regular knowledge are similar, and that science enhances our knowledge, offering a wider view of the world and scientific facts.

About the Author

Herbert Spencer was an English polymath active as a philosopher, psychologist, biologist, sociologist, and anthropologist. Spencer originated the expression "survival of the fittest", which he coined in Principles of Biology (1864) after reading Charles Darwin's 1859 book On the Origin of Species. The term strongly suggests natural selection, yet Spencer saw evolution as extending into realms of sociology and ethics, so he also supported Lamarckism.
