The Little Colonel's Hero

The Little Colonel's Hero by Annie Fellows Johnston is a story set in the early 1900s about a young girl, Lloyd Sherman, called the Little Colonel, whose twelfth birthday starts with disappointment, because she thinks her family forgot her, but soon turns into an exciting journey of finding herself and making new friends. Initially sad because her mother is sick and she feels alone, Lloyd's spirits lift when she learns about a surprise birthday trip that promises adventure. As the story unfolds, she travels and meets new people, including a brave old soldier, Major Pierre de Vaux, and a loyal St. Bernard named Hero, with whom she forms a special bond. The story illustrates themes of loyalty, bravery, and taking care of others even when you are feeling down.
