Summary

"The Son of his Father" by Ridgwell Cullum is a story from the early 1900s about a young man named Gordon Carbhoy who needs to sort things out after getting into big debt because he wasn't careful with money. His rich dad decides to give him a final shot to show what he's made of. To do this, Gordon has to leave home and earn a lot of money fast, which leads him on a tough trip he didn't expect. The story kicks off with some serious tension between Gordon and his dad as they talk about his wild actions and what they've cost him. You can tell they care about each other a lot, but his dad also had high hopes for him. After some tough talk, Gordon takes on a challenge from his father: he needs to earn $100,000.00 in a year, but he talks his way into getting only six months and also gets $5,000 to start with. So, he heads off to this place called Snake's Fall, hoping to get rich in the wild and rough ways of frontier life. The story covers topics such as Gordon learning about himself, the tough times of being a young adult, and how different it is to be privileged versus how hard life can really be.
