Summary

"From the Earth to the Moon, Direct in Ninety-Seven Hours and Twenty Minutes" by Jules Verne is a science fiction story from the 1800s that follows the Baltimore Gun Club and their president, Impey Barbicane, as they try to launch a projectile to the moon. The book explores ideas of American inventiveness, business smarts, and how science and public excitement work together.. The story begins by introducing the Gun Club. This club was formed during the Civil War, but now is ineffective after the war ended. The members are bored with not doing anything, so they get fired up by Barbicane's idea to send a projectile to the moon. Barbicane tells them about his plan. This leads to the club and the public supporting the mission. The beginning sets the scene to explore the real and theoretical challenges of achieving this mission. It also shows the enthusiasm of a nation eager to participate in the unlikely mission.
